Indian Boxers Ready to Take on Global Contenders at World Boxing Championships in Liverpool

New Delhi — A strong 20-member Indian squad, headlined by Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain and two-time World Champion Nikhat Zareen, is set to challenge some of the world’s best at the inaugural World Boxing Championships 2025 in Liverpool. The event will be held from September 4–14 at the M&S Bank Arena.

Organised by World Boxing, the newly formed global governing body for the sport, the biennial championship will bring together elite amateur pugilists from across the globe. India heads into the competition in top form, having won 17 medals earlier this year at the World Boxing Cups in Brazil and Kazakhstan.

At the Brazil Cup, India bagged six medals, with Hitesh striking gold and Abhinash Jamwal securing silver. In Kazakhstan, the momentum continued with 11 more medals, including three golds, highlighted by Nupur Sheoran’s heavyweight triumph.

“Our training in Sheffield has been outstanding. This squad is a mix of proven champions and promising youngsters ready to make their mark. The belief in this team is absolute,” said men’s coach Dharmendra Singh Yadav. Women’s coach Dr. Chandralal echoed the sentiment, praising the squad’s “dedication and true fighting spirit.”

The women’s lineup includes Lovlina Borgohain (75 kg), Nikhat Zareen (51 kg), Pooja Rani (80 kg), Minakshi (48 kg), Sakshi (54 kg), Jaismine (57 kg), Sanju (60 kg), Neeraj Phogat (65 kg), T. Sanamacha Chanu (70 kg), and heavyweight champion Nupur Sheoran (80+ kg).

The men’s side features Abhinash (65 kg), Hitesh (70 kg), Jadumani Singh Mandengbam (50 kg), Pawan Bartwal (55 kg), Sachin (60 kg), Sumit (75 kg), Lakshya Chahar (80 kg), Jugnoo (85 kg), Harsh Choudhary (90 kg), and Narender (90+ kg).

The contingent completed a high-intensity training camp in Sheffield from August 18 to September 1 under the guidance of national head coaches and support staff, focusing on advanced techniques, tactical readiness, and peak fitness.

With depth across every weight division, India enters the Liverpool championships with confidence, aiming to showcase its growing dominance and versatility in world boxing.
