Washington – Frances Tiafoe stormed into the quarterfinals of the DC Open with a dominant 6-1, 6-4 win over 2023 finalist Flavio Cobolli, marking his third ATP Tour quarterfinal appearance of the 2025 season, following strong showings in Houston and at Roland Garros.
With this latest result, Tiafoe joins elite company—Andre Agassi and Alexander Zverev—as the only players in this century to reach the Washington quarterfinals four years in a row. The win also marks Tiafoe’s first Top 20 victory of the season, improving his record to 1-2, and gives him back-to-back hard-court wins for the first time since his run to the 2024 US Open semi-finals, according to ATP.
Tiafoe will now face fellow American Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals—a rematch of their thrilling third-round encounter at last year's US Open, which Tiafoe lost. Their head-to-head record stands at 2-1 in Shelton’s favor, but Tiafoe will have a chance to even the score at 2-2 on Friday.
Shelton earned his quarterfinal spot with an emphatic 6-3, 6-2 win over Gabriel Diallo. It’s Shelton’s second consecutive quarterfinal appearance, following his run at Wimbledon, where he lost to eventual champion Jannik Sinner. Impressively, 7 of Shelton's 19 ATP quarterfinals have come on American soil, ATP Stats notes.
Speaking about the upcoming clash, Tiafoe said, “I'm excited. We're great friends. We played an incredible match at the Open last year—that’s probably the best we both played. He got me the first couple of times. He’s a great player and a great friend.”
In other results, Brandon Nakashima continued the strong American presence in Washington by defeating Cameron Norrie 7-6(3), 6-3, setting up a quarterfinal matchup with seventh seed Alex de Minaur.
Meanwhile, top seed Taylor Fritz advanced with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi, securing his fourth quarterfinal appearance in his last five events, including a semi-final showing at Wimbledon.
