Asia Cup: India overpower Pakistan by eight wickets

India produced a dominant all-round performance to defeat arch-rivals Pakistan by eight wickets in their Group A Asia Cup encounter here on Wednesday.

A disciplined bowling effort restricted Pakistan to just 162 in 43.1 overs before Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan set up a comfortable chase. India reached 164/2 in only 29 overs, sealing a comprehensive victory with 21 overs to spare.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Kedar Jadhav were the standout bowlers for India, claiming three wickets each. Bhuvneshwar returned impressive figures of 3/15, while Jadhav finished with 3/23.

Pakistan struggled to build momentum from the beginning. Bhuvneshwar removed openers Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman early, leaving Pakistan reeling at 2/2 after just 4.1 overs.

Babar Azam and Shoaib Malik then attempted to rebuild the innings. The pair handled India's spinners relatively comfortably and put together an 82-run partnership for the third wicket, briefly putting Pakistan back on track.

Babar, who appeared well set after scoring 47, was eventually beaten by a superb delivery from Kuldeep Yadav. The left-arm wrist-spinner bowled a cleverly disguised googly that turned sharply to knock over Babar's off-stump.

The dismissal triggered a dramatic collapse. Jadhav dismissed Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed for six before removing Asif Ali and Shadab Khan. Pakistan, who had reached 85/2, suddenly slipped to 121/7.

Shoaib Malik's 43 also went in vain after he was run out, while Faheem Ashraf and Mohammad Amir attempted to add some respectability to the total. The duo shared a 37-run partnership, but Pakistan could not survive the full 50 overs.

Jasprit Bumrah, who finished with 2/23, dismissed Ashraf, while Bhuvneshwar and Bumrah completed the tail-end damage by removing Hasan Ali and Usman Khan.

The innings also saw an injury scare for India when Hardik Pandya suffered a lower-back injury during his bowling follow-through. Pandya fell to the ground and had to be taken off the field on a stretcher after receiving medical attention.

Earlier, Pakistan's innings had another missed opportunity when Shoaib Malik was dropped twice. Mahendra Singh Dhoni missed a chance behind the stumps off Pandya, while Bhuvneshwar later misjudged a high catch at deep midwicket.

India's chase was far more straightforward.

Rohit Sharma attacked Pakistan's bowling from the outset and scored a rapid 52 from just 39 balls, hitting six boundaries and three sixes. His aggressive approach gave India complete control during the opening overs.

Rohit and Dhawan added 86 runs for the first wicket before Dhawan was dismissed for 46 off 54 balls. He attempted to attack Faheem Ashraf but picked out Babar Azam at point.

There was no further trouble for India as Ambati Rayudu and Dinesh Karthik completed the chase without losing another wicket.

The victory underlined India's superiority in both departments. Pakistan struggled to recover after losing early wickets, while India's top order made light work of a modest target, turning a potentially high-pressure rivalry encounter into a comfortable eight-wicket win.
