Djokovic wins third US Open men's singles title

Serbia's Novak Djokovic defeated third-seeded Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina in straight sets on Sunday to capture his third US Open men's singles title and claim his second consecutive Grand Slam trophy of the 2018 season.

The sixth-seeded Djokovic overcame Del Potro 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3 in a three-hour, 15-minute final, Xinhua news agency reported.

Djokovic produced a composed performance against the Argentine's powerful game, particularly handling Del Potro's big serve and forehand effectively during the crucial stages of the match.

The victory marked Djokovic's 14th Grand Slam singles title, moving him level with American great Pete Sampras in third place on the all-time list. Only Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal had won more men's singles Grand Slam titles at the time.

The triumph also capped a remarkable comeback for Djokovic. After struggling with an elbow injury and inconsistent form earlier in the year, he had returned to the top of the Grand Slam stage by winning Wimbledon in July before adding the US Open crown.

For Del Potro, the defeat ended a memorable run at Flushing Meadows, where he had reached his first Grand Slam final since winning the US Open in 2009. Despite his powerful hitting, he was unable to overcome Djokovic's defensive skills and consistency over the three-set contest.

With the victory, Djokovic strengthened his position among the sport's all-time greats and continued his resurgence at the biggest tournaments.
