The Indian Army on Saturday foiled an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district, killing two infiltrators in an exchange of fire in the Keran sector, Army sources said.
The encounter began around 3.30 a.m. after alert troops detected suspicious movement in the Jumagund area and challenged the suspected infiltrators, triggering an exchange of fire.
“Two terrorists have been killed in this operation and their bodies are lying on the other side of the LoC after they were shot and they tried to rush back into the Pakistani side,” Army sources said.
A search operation is underway to determine whether any other infiltrators are present in the area.
The incident comes amid continued vigilance along the LoC, which stretches for approximately 740 km through Jammu and Kashmir, covering Kupwara, Bandipora and Baramulla districts in the Valley, as well as Rajouri, Poonch and parts of Jammu district.
The Army maintains a multi-layered anti-infiltration system along the LoC, including a heavily guarded fence and regular patrols to prevent cross-border infiltration, smuggling and militant activity.
Security forces remain on high alert in sensitive sectors, including Rajouri, Poonch, Baramulla and Kupwara. Authorities have also introduced Aadhaar-based systems at certain border checkpoints, including in Poonch, to facilitate the movement of authorised local residents.
Apart from the LoC, Jammu and Kashmir shares an International Border (IB) of nearly 200 km with Pakistan, running through Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts. The Border Security Force (BSF) is responsible for guarding this stretch.
The Army and the BSF continue to coordinate efforts to prevent infiltration, cross-border movement, smuggling and the use of drones to deliver weapons, ammunition, cash and narcotics. Security agencies have repeatedly flagged the use of such consignments by suspected cross-border networks to support militant activities.
