Jamui police shoot main accused in encounter, arrest man over viral video

Police in Bihar’s Jamui shot and injured the alleged main accused in a case involving the alleged harassment of a minor girl and assault on her male friend, officials said.

The accused, identified as Nandan Yadav, was shot in the left leg during an encounter near Marwa Hill, where police said he was hiding after the incident. He was subsequently taken into custody and admitted to Sadar Hospital for treatment.

According to police, a team had received information that Yadav was hiding in the Marwa Hill area and launched a search operation. When officers attempted to apprehend him, he allegedly tried to flee, leading to an exchange of fire in which he sustained a gunshot wound to his leg.

Police said Yadav was identified from a video of the incident that went viral on social media. He was allegedly seen wearing a red scarf in the footage and had been on the police's radar since the case was registered.

The incident reportedly took place on the evening of September 19 when two Class 10 students, who had gone to the area after tuition, were returning home. Police said a group of youths allegedly stopped them on the way.

The girl was allegedly subjected to inappropriate behaviour, while the boy accompanying her was allegedly abused and assaulted. The incident was recorded on video and the footage was subsequently circulated on social media.

Police had registered an FIR against seven people in connection with the case. Three accused had already been arrested before Yadav was apprehended, according to officials.

Police have also arrested Ramashish Chaudhary for allegedly circulating the video on social media. Investigators are examining the video and other evidence to establish the role of each person involved in the incident.

There were also reports of the arrest of another accused, identified as Hare Ram, but this could not be independently confirmed at the time of publication.

The investigation is continuing, with police looking into the involvement of other suspects and the circumstances surrounding the incident and circulation of the video.
