Shimla: At least seven people were killed and 11 others injured on Saturday after a private passenger bus skidded off the road and plunged into a 100-foot-deep gorge in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district, police said.
The accident took place on the Tissa-Bairagarh route. Most of those on board were local residents travelling towards Chamba town. The bus driver and conductor were among those killed.
The injured were rushed to a hospital in Tissa for treatment. Preliminary information suggests that around 20 to 25 passengers were travelling in the bus when the accident occurred.
Chamba Superintendent of Police Vijay Saklani said the exact cause of the accident was not yet known and that police would investigate the circumstances leading to the crash.
The accident triggered panic in the area, with local residents beginning rescue efforts even before police and administrative teams reached the spot. Rescue operations were stepped up after the authorities arrived.
According to preliminary information, the bus, operated by Sharma Travelers, left Bairagarh for Chamba at around 6.30 a.m. It had travelled only about three kilometres when the driver reportedly lost control near the Chaluj turn.
The bus skidded off the road and rolled down the hillside before landing on the road below. Eyewitnesses told police that the driver lost control while negotiating a turn.
Rescuers faced considerable difficulty in pulling passengers from the badly damaged vehicle.
Chamba is among the more remote areas of Himachal Pradesh, where limited availability and low frequency of passenger buses can often result in overcrowding.
Private buses and driver negligence have frequently come under scrutiny following fatal road accidents in the state, with police in several cases blaming reckless driving and inadequate training.
The location where Saturday’s accident occurred is also considered accident-prone, with several crashes reported in the area in recent years.
