Air India Express Flight Bound for Kozhikode Makes Emergency Landing in Kochi

Kochi: A major aviation mishap was averted on Thursday when an Air India Express flight carrying around 160 passengers made an emergency landing at Kochi in Kerala after developing a technical snag mid-air.

The flight, AIE 398, originated from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and was en route to Kozhikode when the pilot detected an issue with the aircraft’s landing gear. Acting promptly, the pilot sought permission for an emergency diversion and landing at Cochin International Airport.

Following the distress call, airport authorities immediately activated full emergency protocols. The aircraft landed safely at around 9.07 a.m., with fire and rescue teams, medical personnel, and security staff deployed along the runway as a precaution.

A detailed post-landing inspection revealed that two tyres of the aircraft had burst, underscoring the seriousness of the malfunction and validating the crew’s decision to divert to Kochi.

Officials of Cochin International Airports Limited (CIAL) coordinated the emergency response and post-landing procedures, ensuring that all passengers were safely escorted to the terminal. Airport sources confirmed that all emergency systems functioned as intended.

Passengers have been accommodated in the airport lounge while arrangements are being made for their onward journey. Air India Express officials said efforts are underway to operate an alternative flight to Kozhikode at the earliest or, if required, arrange suitable ground transportation.

In case of significant delays or cancellations, the airline has assured passengers of road transport to Kozhikode, which is approximately a seven-hour drive from Kochi. Airline representatives are also coordinating refreshments and assistance for passengers awaiting further updates.

The incident highlighted the importance of swift decision-making by flight crews and the preparedness of airport emergency systems, which together helped avert a potentially serious accident.
