Over 1 lakh duplicate voters in Jaipur deleted from electoral list

The names of 1,05,299 duplicate or allegedly fake voters have been removed from the electoral rolls across 19 Assembly constituencies in Jaipur, district collector Siddharth Mahajan said on Saturday.

The development comes after the Congress recently approached the Election Commission seeking an investigation into the presence of duplicate names in the electoral rolls.

According to sources, the Rajasthan election department used specialised software to identify potentially duplicate entries. The system was designed to detect similarities in voters’ names and facial details, helping officials identify cases that required further verification.

The officials then reviewed the flagged entries before removing the names found to be duplicate from the electoral rolls. The process is being carried out as part of an effort to improve the accuracy of the voter database ahead of the state Assembly elections.

Mahajan said that 1,05,299 names had so far been removed from the voter lists in Jaipur, while objections received regarding the exercise were being examined.

Officials cautioned that the figure could change as the verification process is still continuing. The exercise to identify and verify duplicate voters is expected to continue until September 20, after which a more definitive figure is likely to emerge.

Duplicate or allegedly fake voter entries have also been identified and removed in several other districts. According to sources, 24,197 names were deleted in Ajmer, 24,053 in Alwar, 32,886 in Banswara, 13,211 in Bara and 128 in Barmer.

The large-scale verification exercise assumes significance as Rajasthan prepares for its Assembly elections later this year. Ensuring that electoral rolls contain accurate and eligible voter information is a key part of the election preparation process.

Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner Om Prakash Rawat and Election Commissioners Sunil Arora and Ashok Lawasa are scheduled to visit Rajasthan on September 17 and 18 to review preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections.

Chief Electoral Officer Anand Kumar said the Election Commission team would assess the election preparedness during its two-day visit.

The final number of duplicate entries removed across the state is expected to become clearer once the ongoing verification and objection-resolution process is completed.
