Sitharaman discusses J&K security situation with governor

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday held discussions with Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik on the security situation in the state, with particular focus on infiltration attempts and ongoing counter-terrorism operations.

Sitharaman, accompanied by then Army Chief General Bipin Rawat, met Malik at the Raj Bhavan in Srinagar, according to an official statement. The Governor received the Defence Minister on her arrival and was also greeted by her following his recent appointment to the post.

The meeting covered several issues related to maintaining both internal and external security in Jammu and Kashmir. Officials discussed the challenges posed by attempts to infiltrate across the Line of Control as well as the ongoing operations against militants.

The two also reviewed preparations for the Urban Local Bodies and Panchayat elections, which were scheduled to be held between October and December that year. Ensuring adequate security during the electoral process was an important part of the broader security planning in the state.

Infrastructure and connectivity were another key area of discussion. The need to strengthen and maintain important road networks and strategic routes across Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the Ladakh region, was emphasised during the meeting.

The Governor appreciated the role of the Northern Army in maintaining security and said its coordination with the civil administration, Jammu and Kashmir Police and Central armed forces had helped ensure the safety of residents.

The meeting came at a time when security agencies in Jammu and Kashmir were closely monitoring infiltration attempts and intensifying counter-terrorism operations, while the administration was also preparing for local elections and working to improve connectivity in strategically important areas.
