Food grain output to be record 284.83 million tonnes

India's foodgrain production is estimated to reach a record 284.83 million tonnes in the 2017-18 crop year, according to the fourth advance estimates released by the Agriculture Ministry on Tuesday.

Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh said rice production was estimated at 112.91 million tonnes, while wheat output was expected to reach 99.70 million tonnes.

"I am happy to share the 4th advanced estimates of foodgrain production for the year 2017-18. The country witnesses record food grain production estimated at 284.83 million tonnes," Singh said in a tweet.

The estimates put coarse cereal production at 46.99 million tonnes, including 28.72 million tonnes of maize.

Pulses production was estimated at 25.23 million tonnes, including 11.23 million tonnes of gram and 3.56 million tonnes of urad, or split black gram.

India's total foodgrain production stood at 275.11 million tonnes in 2016-17, meaning the latest estimate represents an increase of nearly 9.72 million tonnes.

The Agriculture Minister also said horticulture production during 2017-18 was estimated at 306.81 million tonnes.
