Mahalaya observed, Navratri to commence from Sunday

Ranchi: As Mahalaya was observed on Saturday devotees will now welcome Goddess Durga during the Navratri festival starting from Sunday.

Among the Bengali community there is special importance of Mahalaya as the people throughout the year wait for this day. This time Mahalya was observed on Saturday which means that Navratra will commence from Sunday. The occasion of Mahalya is celebrated across the country.

People believe that on Mahalaya Goddess Durga had called the demon Mahishasur. Since the day also coincides with Amavasya therefore in the morning first people pay tributes to their ancestors which also marks the end of ‘pitra-paksha’.

Folklore has it that in the evening Goddess Durga comes down to earth from Kailash Parvat and for the nine days she remains on the earth during which she solves the problems of the people and showers their blessings.

On Mahalaya the sculptors prepare their eyes and almost the sculptures are finished. A prominent priest of the city said Mahalaya had commenced from 3.14 am. As the story goes that the trio of Brahma Vishnu and Mahesh had brought to life Goddess Durga to kill the demon Mahishasur who had a boon that he cannot be killed by a man or god after which he went on the become the king of the demons and also attacked the gods.

The gods who lost the battle with the demon king Mahishasur went to Lord Vishnu who along with Brahma and Shiva created Goddess Durga who later managed to slay the demon on the 10th day of her fight which is also celebrated as Vijaya Dashmi.
