Gumla: The Gumla district administration and Food Safety Department have intensified inspections of food establishments to protect consumers from adulterated and unsafe food products ahead of Diwali and the Chhath festival.

As part of the campaign, a team led by Food Safety Officers Asha Raj, Kumar Prabhakar and Rizzwal Pandey conducted surprise inspections at various shops, hotels and commercial establishments in urban areas.

During the inspection, the team found that chutney at M/s Jitendra Hotel contained non-food-grade colour and immediately ordered its destruction. At M/s Arogya Amritulya, biscuits were found without proper labelling, while M/s Saloni Sweets was issued a notice to improve hygiene after the team observed unhygienic conditions on the premises.

The inspections triggered concern among traders and food business operators in the market. Food safety officials warned that strict action would be taken against those found selling stale, unsafe or expired food products during the festive season.

Shopkeepers and hotel operators have been directed to remove expired products immediately, maintain proper hygiene and operate only with a valid Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) licence.

Officials further warned that violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act could invite legal action, including the registration of FIRs and sealing of establishments.

The department clarified that the inspection drive would continue across the district, including Bishunpur, to ensure compliance with food safety standards and protect public health during the festive season.
