Jharkhand Plans Satellite Townships to Support Future Urban Growth

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has directed officials to examine the possibility of developing satellite townships in urbanised districts across the state as part of a broader plan to manage future population growth and improve urban infrastructure.

Soren held a high-level meeting with senior officials at the Jharkhand Ministry on Thursday to review land-related issues linked to the Greater Ranchi Development Authority (GRDA) and the Ranchi Smart City project. The discussions focused on planned urban expansion, infrastructure requirements and the need to prepare cities for changing population and economic needs.

The Chief Minister asked officials to conduct a comprehensive assessment of suitable locations in urbanised districts for satellite townships. The proposed study will consider land availability, road and transport connectivity, existing infrastructure, civic amenities, employment opportunities and the likely growth in population.

He said urban development should not be limited to constructing roads and buildings, but should focus on creating liveable and sustainable urban centres where residents can access essential services, safe surroundings, efficient transportation and quality public facilities.

Focus on expansion of Ranchi Smart City

The meeting also examined the possibility of expanding Ranchi Smart City in the coming years. Soren directed officials to assess the existing infrastructure and available resources and prepare a detailed long-term plan for its expansion.

With Ranchi witnessing growing population pressure and increasing economic activity, the Chief Minister stressed the need for planned development rather than allowing the city to expand in an unstructured manner.

Officials also discussed the possibility of future discussions with Heavy Engineering Corporation Limited (HEC) on land and other matters associated with planned development in the area. Soren directed the concerned departments to study all relevant aspects and make the necessary preparations.

Urban development linked to jobs and investment

The Chief Minister said modern urban projects should also contribute to economic growth by creating opportunities for investment, employment, trade and other economic activities.

He directed officials to speed up land-related processes and other important work connected with the projects through better coordination among departments. He also called for regular reviews so that key targets can be achieved within the stipulated timelines.

Soren emphasised that urban planning must look beyond immediate requirements and take into account the needs of future generations. The objective, he said, should be to develop modern, inclusive and well-planned cities that offer better living conditions while strengthening Jharkhand's economic potential.
