Ranchi Dams Fill Up as Getalsud Nears Danger Level, Authorities Issue Alert

Rising water levels in several reservoirs around Ranchi have increased concerns over the impact of continued rainfall, with Getalsud Dam nearing its maximum level and Paras and Nandani reservoirs already reaching full capacity.

The water level at Getalsud Dam stood at 589.05 metres on Monday, against its maximum level of 590.24 metres. This leaves the reservoir just 1.19 metres short of its upper limit. More than 18,507 hectare-metres of water has accumulated in the dam, with continued rainfall further increasing the inflow.

The situation is also being closely monitored at other reservoirs. Paras reached 674.39 metres and Nandani touched 674.69 metres, with both reported to be 100 per cent full. Buchaopa Dam was at 668.17 metres, while the water level at Sukri reservoir stood at 728 metres.

With several reservoirs recording high water levels, the possibility of releasing excess water could increase if heavy rainfall continues. Such releases could raise water levels in the Swarnarekha and other local waterways, increasing the risk for villages and settlements located along their banks.

Authorities have stepped up monitoring in vulnerable areas and are advising residents to stay away from rivers, dams, streams and other water bodies. People living in low-lying areas have also been urged to remain alert and move to safer locations if water levels rise or evacuation instructions are issued.

The Water Resources Department is maintaining round-the-clock surveillance of the reservoirs and monitoring inflows and outflows. Getalsud remains a particular focus because of its importance to Ranchi's water supply and its proximity to the maximum permissible level.

Officials are keeping a close watch on the situation as rainfall continues. Any further sharp rise in the water level could lead to additional water-management measures, including the release of water from reservoirs, depending on prevailing conditions.
