Koel River Changes Course Overnight, Flood-Like Situation Returns to Palamu After 10 Years

The situation along the Koel River changed dramatically within a few hours on Friday. What appeared to be a normal river until the early morning suddenly turned into a rapidly rising water body, triggering flood-like conditions in several parts of Palamu after nearly a decade.

Several low-lying areas of Medininagar were flooded as the river water entered residential neighbourhoods. The Koel River Front was also completely submerged, highlighting the sudden scale of the rise in water levels.

River rises rapidly within 30 minutes

The Koel River was reportedly flowing normally until around 3 am on Friday. Between approximately 3:30 am and 4 am, however, the water level began rising rapidly. Within a short time, water reached several areas along the riverbank.

The water level in Medininagar was reported to have crossed 5.4 metres. Residents of Kandu Mohalla, Muslim Nagar, Pahadi Mohalla and Belwatikar were among those affected, with water entering roads and residential areas.

Waterlogging was also reported around Shivala Ghat and Girwar School Road.

Heavy rain upstream sends water downstream

The sudden rise in the Koel's water level is being attributed largely to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of Gumla, Lohardaga and Simdega.

Water flowing downstream from these areas eventually reached the North Koel River, causing the sharp rise in water levels in Palamu. The situation was particularly noticeable near Shahpur Bridge, where the river current became significantly stronger.

Administration steps up vigilance

As news of the rising river spread, people began gathering along the riverbanks to watch the swollen Koel. Some were reportedly seen approaching dangerously close to the water to take photographs and selfies.

Police subsequently began making public announcements, warning people to stay away from the river and avoid entering vulnerable areas.

Police personnel, magistrates and teams of divers have been deployed in riverside areas as a precautionary measure. Authorities are keeping a close watch on low-lying neighbourhoods in view of the possibility of further changes in the river level.

Rain also disrupts normal life in Latehar

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall has also affected several parts of Latehar district. Roads have been damaged at some locations, while fallen trees have disrupted traffic. Waterlogging has also been reported in several areas.

The administration is assessing the extent of the damage and monitoring the situation.

The sudden surge in the Koel River after nearly a decade has brought both concern and hope to Palamu. While the increased water availability could provide relief for agriculture and irrigation, the immediate priority remains protecting people living in low-lying and riverside areas.
