A 65-year-old man was found dead at Sonwa Dangal under the Rikhia police station area of Deoghar district on Saturday, with his family alleging that he was beaten to death following a long-running land dispute.
The deceased was identified as Ramki Mahto, a resident of Bihroji village. Police found injury marks on his forehead and other injuries on his body. His bicycle and slippers were recovered from a bush near the spot, while his mobile phone and charger were found some distance away.
After receiving information about the incident, Rikhia police station in-charge Prabhat Kumar, Sub-Inspectors Shakeel Ahmed and Ajay Kumar Singh, Mukhiya Anil Kumar Sah and Panchayat Samiti member Pappu Rao, along with a large number of local residents, reached the spot.
Police examined the scene, prepared the inquest report and sent the body to Deoghar Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examination.
The deceased’s son, Damru Yadav, said his father worked at a peda shop in Deoghar and generally returned home at around 10 pm.
Damru alleged that some relatives had been harassing the family for a long time over a land dispute. He further claimed that about a month ago, the same relatives had allegedly demolished their house and assaulted his father.
According to Damru, four to five relatives were allegedly waiting for his father at Sonwa Dangal on Saturday night. He claimed that they attacked him after finding him alone and that the assault resulted in his death.
Police, however, have not yet established the circumstances surrounding the death or confirmed the involvement of any particular person.
Investigators have secured the articles recovered from the scene and are questioning local residents as part of the probe. The exact motive and circumstances leading to the death are expected to become clearer after the investigation and post-mortem examination.
No FIR had been registered in connection with the incident at the time of filing this report. Police said further action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation and the post-mortem report.
