Jharkhand Monsoon Session from tomorrow, all-party meet calls for dialogue with agitating students

The six-day Monsoon Session of the Jharkhand Assembly, beginning Thursday, is likely to witness intense political exchanges over the ongoing agitation by students and job aspirants in Ranchi.

The protest, which has continued for nearly two weeks at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium, centres on alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).

Ahead of the session, Assembly Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato chaired an all-party meeting on Wednesday to discuss arrangements for the smooth functioning of the House. The students' agitation emerged as one of the key issues during the discussions, with leaders from various parties urging the government to open dialogue with the protesters and seek an early resolution.

The meeting was attended by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Radha Krishna Kishore, Congress Legislature Party leader Pradeep Yadav, JLKM MLA Jairam Mahato, AJSU MLA Nirmal Mahto, LJP MLA Suresh Paswan and representatives of other political parties.

Jairam Mahato pressed the government to immediately hold talks with representatives of the protesting students. He also sought a special two-hour discussion in the Assembly on the alleged recruitment scam and demanded a detailed debate on the drought situation in the state.

Political observers expect the recruitment controversy to become one of the major flashpoints of the session, particularly with opposition parties likely to demand stronger action and greater accountability from the government.

Speaking after the all-party meeting, Chief Minister Soren said the Assembly was the highest forum for reflecting the aspirations of the people and protecting democratic values. He said the government remained committed to meaningful discussions, accountability and constructive dialogue on issues concerning the public.

Soren also appealed to political parties to keep the interests of Jharkhand above partisan considerations and work together to ensure that the session functions effectively.

The Monsoon Session will run from August 6 to August 12, with five working days. The government is scheduled to present the first supplementary budget for the 2026-27 financial year on August 7.

Besides the students' agitation and alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations, issues including law and order, drought conditions and other matters of public concern are expected to generate heated exchanges between the treasury benches and the opposition.
