Ranchi: Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar and Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Thursday participated in the historic Jagannathpur Rath Yatra Mahotsav 2026 in Ranchi, offering prayers to Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra and wishing peace, prosperity, happiness and progress for the people of the state.
The Governor and the Chief Minister extended their greetings to devotees on the occasion of the annual Rath Yatra festival, one of Jharkhand's most significant religious events.
Following traditional rituals, Chief Minister Hemant Soren ceremonially pulled the ropes of Lord Jagannath's chariot, formally flagging off the Rath Yatra amid chants of "Jai Jai Jagannath" by thousands of devotees gathered at the temple premises. The Governor also participated in the celebrations and offered prayers for the well-being of the state.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister announced that the state government would construct a grand ceremonial gateway (Torandwar) on the road leading to the historic Jagannathpur Temple in Dhurwa to enhance its visibility and prominence. He said the initiative would strengthen the temple's identity as a major religious and tourism destination.
"The Jagannathpur Temple deserves greater recognition, and the government is committed to promoting this historic shrine on the tourism map of the state," Soren said. He added that devotees eagerly await the Rath Yatra throughout the year, and the massive turnout reflected the temple's spiritual significance and enduring appeal.
The Chief Minister also assured that efforts would be made to further improve the organisation of the Rath Yatra fair in the coming years, making it more attractive and convenient for devotees and visitors.
Several ministers, Members of Parliament, MLAs and other dignitaries attended the celebrations along with thousands of devotees who witnessed the grand procession and participated in the festivities.
