Ranchi: Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has once again emerged as the highest individual income taxpayer in the Bihar-Jharkhand region. The information was shared by Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax for Bihar and Jharkhand, Dr. D. Sudhakar Rao, during a press conference in Ranchi.
An important meeting of Income Tax officials from Bihar and Jharkhand was organized at Radisson Blu Hotel regarding the implementation of the Government of India’s new Income Tax Act. More than 100 officials from both states attended the meeting chaired by Dr. Rao. The primary focus of the discussion was the effective implementation of the new tax law, which is scheduled to come into force from April 1, 2026, along with ensuring better facilities for taxpayers.
Dr. Rao said the new Income Tax Act has been designed to be simpler and more organized compared to the existing law. He added that the department is working to ensure taxpayers in Bihar and Jharkhand do not face difficulties during the transition phase and can easily understand and benefit from the new provisions. Officials are also being provided with training and detailed guidelines for smooth execution.
He further informed that Bihar and Jharkhand successfully achieved their income tax collection target for the financial year 2025-26. Together, the two states collected nearly Rs 20,000 crore in taxes, including around Rs 12,000 crore from Jharkhand and Rs 8,000 crore from Bihar.
Dr. Rao also stated that nearly 40 lakh people from Bihar and Jharkhand filed their income tax returns during the previous financial year. The department now aims to bring more people under the tax net and make the return filing process easier in the coming years.
