
Deoghar: Illegal collection at entry points under the municipal corporation came to light after a surprise midnight inspection conducted by Mayor Ravi Kumar Raut. The inspection, carried out around 12 AM, revealed that toll workers were charging significantly more than the prescribed rates.According to available information, repeated complaints had been received from local youths, vehicle owners, and drivers alleging arbitrary overcharging by the contractor and toll staff at the entry points.
Taking the matter seriously, the Mayor decided to conduct a sudden late-night inspection.During the inspection, the Mayor interacted with drivers present at the spot and questioned the toll workers. Receipts issued to vehicles were also examined. It was found that nearly 30 percent higher charges were being collected than the officially fixed rates. Expressing strong displeasure, the Mayor termed the practice completely illegal and unacceptable.
Local inputs further indicated that this overcharging had been continuing for several months. The Mayor has recommended a thorough inquiry against the concerned contractor and directed strict action. Instructions have also been issued to identify staff involved in the malpractice and take appropriate action against them.
The Mayor directed municipal officials to ensure that clear rate charts are displayed at all entry points. He also instructed that complaint helpline numbers be made public to prevent such irregularities in the future.
