500-pound US bomb discovered on riverbank in Baharagora

Jamshedpur: Panic gripped residents after a powerful unexploded bomb was discovered buried beneath sand and soil along the Subernarekha riverbank in the Panipara–Nagudsaai area of Baharagora block in East Singhbhum district.
According to local sources, villagers first spotted the suspicious object yesterday and alerted authorities, prompting immediate action.

Preliminary observations suggest the device resembles a gas cylinder in size and bears markings indicating “AN-M64 500 lb… American… unexploded,” confirming it to be a US-manufactured 500-pound (approximately 227 Kg) bomb that has remained dormant.

Baharagora officer-in-charge Shankar Prasad Kushwaha reported the matter to SP ( Rural ).

As a precautionary measure, residents have been strictly advised to stay away from the site and refrain from any form of tampering.

The local  administration has reached out to officials at the Kalaikunda Air Force Station for technical assistance. The entire area has been cordoned off, and public movement has been restricted to prevent any untoward incident.

Initial suspicions suggest that the bomb may be linked to an old military aircraft crash reported near Mahuldangri in the past. It is believed that the bomb could have fallen into the river during the incident and remained buried for years.

Given the bomb’s size and destructive potential, authorities have classified the situation as highly sensitive.  Security has been tightened, and vigilance remains high until expert teams complete their assessment and neutralisation process.
