Ranchi: An interesting political development unfolded during recent budget session of Jharkhand Legislative Assembly, where lone MLA Tiger Jairam Kumar Mahato from Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) emerged as one of most active voices, overshadowing main Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
By moving seven cut motions, Mahato not only cornered the government but also exposed perceived inaction of BJP within the House. During discussion on budgetary demands of various departments, he was allowed to speak on six of his motions, making full use of nearly 15 minutes allocated for each under Assembly rules. With detailed preparation and an aggressive tone, he questioned policies and functioning of the government while also taking aim at the Opposition's silence.
The situation has triggered discontent within BJP ranks, with senior leaders reportedly expressing displeasure over lack of participation by party MLAs and urging them to adopt a more assertive role in proceedings. Concerns have also been raised over absence of any amendment motion from BJP on Governor’s address, a missed opportunity traditionally used by the Opposition to hold the government accountable.
In his speeches, Mahato underlined the importance of a strong Opposition in a democracy, criticizing BJP for failing to perform that role effectively. Developments signal a shifting dynamic in Jharkhand politics, where even a single MLA, if proactive, can dominate legislative discourse. Mahato’s performance has brought him into focus, while BJP faces growing pressure to reassess its strategy and presence inside the House.
