
Deoghar: In a major action against cyber crime in the district, police have arrested six cyber fraudsters involved in online cheating. The action was carried out on the instructions of SP Saurabh and under the supervision of Deputy Superintendent of Police Raja Kumar Mitra. The accused used to pose as fake customer care executives and trap people to commit online fraud.Police received secret information that some suspects were operating a cyber fraud racket from a semi-constructed house located at Ledwa village under Pathraul police station area in Mohanpur block. Acting on the information, a police team conducted a raid at the location and arrested six persons from the spot.During preliminary investigation, it was found that the accused used to impersonate customer care officials of Flipkart and Amazon as well as officers of Airtel Payment Bank. They also uploaded fake mobile numbers on Google in the name of PhonePe customer care to lure people into calling them for assistance. Once contacted, the victims were misled through various pretexts and cheated online.According to police, the accused used to promise cashback offers and persuade victims to create PhonePe and Paytm gift cards, which were then immediately redeemed by the fraudsters. In some cases, they posed as Airtel Payment Bank officials and claimed that the victim’s card had been blocked. They then asked victims to follow certain procedures through the Airtel Thanks app and cheated them in the name of reactivating the card. The gang also sent fraudulent links in the name of PM Kisan scheme, SBI credit card services and loan approvals to trap people.The arrested accused have been identified as Suraj Kumar Das, Birendra Kumar Das, Arun Kumar Das, W Das, Sandeep Kumar Das and Ajay Kumar Das. All the accused are residents of different villages under Pathraul police station area in Deoghar district.During the raid, police seized eight mobile phones and nine SIM cards from the possession of the accused. Police are examining these devices to trace other members of the gang and to investigate more cases of cyber fraud.The raid was conducted by a team from Cyber Police Station and Pathraul Police Station. Police said that the drive against cyber criminals in the district will continue and strict action will be taken against those involved in such illegal activities.
