Chaibasa (Jharkhand), Jan 22 (IANS):
A fierce gun battle has been underway since Thursday morning between Maoists and security forces in the Saranda forest area of West Singhbhum district, Jharkhand.
Although unconfirmed reports indicate that several Maoists may have been killed, authorities have not yet released official figures regarding casualties.
Security forces have launched extensive search operations in the region, where intermittent firing was still reported. Kolhan Division DIG Anuranjan Kispotta confirmed the ongoing encounter and stated that further details would be shared once the operation concludes.
As a security measure, the entire area has been sealed and additional forces deployed. Senior police and security officials have reached the site to monitor the situation.
Jharkhand Police spokesperson and IG (Operations) Michaelraj S. said the exchange of fire has continued since morning and claimed that Maoists have suffered significant losses.
Police sources said the joint operation was initiated following specific intelligence inputs about Maoist presence near Kumbhdih village under the Chotanagara police station limits. During the operation, Maoists allegedly opened indiscriminate fire from an ambush, forcing security personnel to retaliate.
The encounter lasted several hours, during which security forces reportedly gained the upper hand. Sources claimed that a senior Maoist leader carrying a reward of Rs 50 lakh, along with several associates, was killed, though official confirmation is awaited.
Several Maoist bodies were recovered from the site along with weapons, ammunition, and daily-use materials. Those killed are believed to be active and wanted cadres, many carrying cash rewards.
Anti-Naxalite operations have intensified in Chaibasa and surrounding areas over recent months. In June 2025, four Naxalites, including senior commanders, were killed in separate encounters in Tonto and Goilkera areas. This is the first Maoist encounter reported in Jharkhand in 2026.
In 2025, security forces eliminated more than 25 Naxalites across the state.
