Ranchi- A special court under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in Ranchi has awarded life imprisonment to four men, including the boyfriend of the minor survivor, for gang raping a teenage girl.
The sentence was delivered on Monday after their conviction last Thursday, November 20. The court was expected to announce the punishment on Saturday, November 22, but it was postponed until Monday.
The convicted men — Deepak Kumar, Nitesh Kumar, Bunty Tirkey and Gopal Koiri — were found guilty of committing the brutal crime. Another accused, who is a juvenile, is being tried separately before the Juvenile Justice Board.
As per the prosecution, the girl knew the main accused, Deepak Kumar. On October 2, 2023, Deepak called her to meet him at Dhurwa Dam and later took her to Deer Park on Khunti Road, where he had physical relations with her.
After this, Deepak contacted his friends — Nitesh, Bunty, Gopal and one more minor — and forced the girl to go with them to Dasham Falls, located nearly 40 km from Ranchi. There, the group gang raped her.
The survivor stated that she remained in fear throughout the assault and was threatened when she tried to resist.
The next day, Deepak left her near Dhurwa Dam and escaped. When she returned home, she informed her family, leading to the registration of an FIR at Dhurwa-Hatia Police Station.
Police acted immediately, arresting all the adult accused and sending them to judicial custody. The prosecution presented strong evidence such as the girl’s testimony, medical reports, crime scene verification and technical inputs.
Based on this material, a detailed charge sheet was filed. The special POCSO court found the evidence reliable and convicted the accused on November 20.
The court observed that offences of this nature against minors are extremely disturbing for society and require harsh punishment. All four adult accused were thus sentenced to life imprisonment.
