Woman Arrested for Poisoning Husband Just 36 Days After Marriage in Jharkhand

Garhwa – In yet another shocking case of spousal murder, a 22-year-old woman has been arrested in Jharkhand’s Garhwa district for allegedly poisoning her husband just over a month after their wedding.

The accused, identified as Sunita, was taken into custody on Monday evening and is being sent to judicial custody, police confirmed.

According to officials, the incident came to light after the victim’s mother, Rajmati Devi, lodged a complaint accusing her daughter-in-law of murdering her son.

The deceased, Budhnath Singh, was a resident of Bahokundar village under Ranka police station limits. He had married Sunita, daughter of Raghunath Singh from Vishunpur village in Chhattisgarh’s Ramchandrapur police station area, on May 11 this year.

However, tensions reportedly surfaced just a day after the wedding. Sunita returned to her parental home and told her family that she was unhappy with the marriage and had no intention of living with Budhnath.

Family members from both sides attempted reconciliation, and a village council (panchayat) was convened on June 5. After the meeting, Sunita agreed to return to her husband’s home.

On June 14, the couple visited the Ramanujganj market in Chhattisgarh, where Sunita allegedly persuaded Budhnath to buy pesticide, claiming it was needed for farming purposes.

Police allege that on the night of June 15, Sunita mixed the pesticide into Budhnath’s food. He was found dead the following morning, having failed to wake up.

The body was sent for a post-mortem examination, and the exact cause of death will be determined upon receipt of the report.

Confirming the arrest, the Ranka police station in-charge said, “We have taken the wife into custody based on the mother’s complaint. The post-mortem is being conducted, and we will confirm the cause of death after receiving the report. Further investigation is ongoing.”
