Eight police personnel suspended over assault of Army jawan

Ranchi: In a serious action following allegations of police brutality, eight police personnel, including the officer-in-charge of Jugsalai police station in Jamshedpur, have been suspended. The suspension order came after a probe report by the Zonal IG, based on which the Director General of Police (DGP) directed Jamshedpur SSP Kishore Kaushal to take strict action.

Those suspended include Inspector Sachin Kumar Das, Sub-Inspectors Deepak Mahato, Tapeshwar Baitha, Shailendra Nayak, Kumar Sumit, and Mantu Kumar, along with constables Shailesh Kumar and Shankar Kumar.

The incident dates back to March 14, when an altercation broke out near a temple in the Jugsalai area over the application of Holi colours. Suraj Rai, an Indian Army jawan, was present at the spot along with his cousin Vijay Rai. Following the incident, Jugsalai police arrested both men and sent them to judicial custody on March 15.

Suraj Rai alleged that despite identifying himself as an Army personnel, the police brutally assaulted him at the police station and wrongfully imprisoned him. The matter caught attention, leading to an investigation ordered by the DGP and conducted by Zonal IG Akhilesh Jha.

After the probe confirmed misconduct, the DGP instructed stern disciplinary action, resulting in the suspension of the involved officers. The move underscores the state police department’s commitment to accountability and upholding the rights of citizens, including those serving in the armed forces.
