Emily Ratajkowski on What She Discovered About Herself During a Break from Intimacy

Los Angeles: Actress Emily Ratajkowski shared that during a period of celibacy, she discovered she could write better.

The 33-year-old star recently went through a phase of abstaining from intimacy and noticed a positive shift in her creativity, particularly in her writing, according to Female First UK.

Speaking to Interview magazine, Emily said, “I actually just went through a period of celibacy and had drinks with a friend. I told him, ‘I’ve noticed that I’ve really been able to write better.’ And he said something beautiful—‘Ultimately, making art or wanting sex and connection are both about seeking connection from other people, so it makes sense that that energy could be interchangeable.’”

As reported by Female First UK, Emily reflected on how society often misunderstands the purpose of sex, suggesting that intimacy can be experienced in many different forms.

“I think one of the mistakes we make culturally is thinking of sex as a single, uniform experience. We're told we should all get the same things from it—oxytocin, intimacy, orgasms, self-esteem—but those expectations are often contradictory,” she explained.

She continued, “What I’ve learned is that sex can express so many different things, even within one relationship. It can be cathartic, a way of working through emotions, seeking closeness, or even grieving. Just like hugging, talking, walking, or meditating, sex can serve multiple purposes.”

Emily also discussed how this perspective influences her teaching. “With my writing students, I notice they’re hesitant to write sex scenes because they think it has to be a ‘good’ sex scene. But I always ask, ‘What does that even mean in the context of your character’s life?’ A scene is just a scene—it reflects whatever it needs to, like any other moment in storytelling.”
