India is planning to send a large, multi-sector business delegation to the United States in the first quarter of 2027 to strengthen trade and investment ties between the two countries, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has announced.
Speaking at an interaction with Indian-Americans organised by the US Indian Community Foundation in Chicago, Goyal said the proposed visit would bring together Indian businesses from several sectors to explore commercial partnerships and investment opportunities with American companies.
The minister revealed that a similar business delegation had initially been planned during his ongoing US visit but had to be dropped because of scheduling constraints arising from his participation in the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee.
“We thought we will do that very soon, maybe in the first quarter of next year. We will have a very large Indian delegation, multi-sectoral come here,” Goyal said.
He also outlined plans to increase India's participation in trade fairs across the United States, including in Chicago and other major business centres. The proposals emerged during his discussions with local business representatives, who highlighted the potential for greater engagement between Indian and American enterprises.
Goyal said he would take these suggestions back to India and work towards expanding the country's presence at existing trade exhibitions while exploring opportunities to organise additional business events.
“We will make sure Indians come in larger numbers and present what the India story is,” he said.
During his visit to Chicago, the minister held meetings with American companies, investors and business representatives of varying sizes. He also participated in one-on-one discussions with major investors through the US Chamber of Commerce.
Goyal invited American businesses and Indian-American entrepreneurs to explore investment opportunities in India, assuring them of government support in addressing regulatory and operational challenges.
He highlighted Invest India, the government's investment promotion and facilitation agency, as a key point of contact for companies looking to establish or expand their presence in the country. He also offered assistance through the Indian Consulate General's office in connecting investors with the relevant government departments.
Addressing the wider Indian-American community, Goyal encouraged members to contribute to India's economic growth through investment, technology transfers, innovation and knowledge-sharing.
He pointed to India's expanding domestic market, young population and growing international trade relationships as important factors creating opportunities for businesses. He also highlighted the complementary strengths of the two economies.
“The United States of America has capital strength, technology strength. India has ambition,” Goyal said, emphasising India's aspirations for economic expansion.
Goyal's proposed business mission comes amid broader efforts by India and the United States to deepen their commercial relationship across manufacturing, technology, services and investment.
Before arriving in Chicago, the minister represented India at the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee, where discussions covered forced labour, the future of the World Trade Organization and concerns over state-supported excess production capacity.
The proposed delegation is expected to offer Indian companies a platform to showcase their capabilities, establish new business connections and explore opportunities in the American market, while encouraging greater participation by US investors in India's expanding economy.
