Workshop organised by Election commission for media over VVPAT machines

Ranchi: A workshop was organised at the office of the state’s chief electoral officer here for the media persons to familiarise them with the functioning of the VVPAT machines and address any queries regarding how the entire process would be played out during the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

State’s Chief Electoral Officer L Khiyangate said VVPAT are very good machines and has been declared completely safe by several High Courts and Supreme Court of the country. He said that if anyone tries to manipulate the machines it would immediately go into the factory mode making it unfit for use once again.

Earlier officials of the commission while detailing the functioning of the machine said that once the presiding officer presses the button a green light would flash on the top of the EVM machine signaling the voter to press the candidate to vote. Once the voter casts his vote the slip would be visible in the machine for 7 seconds after which it would be sealed in the box. The officials said that this for the first time that the machine is being used in Lok Sabha polls in Jharkhand and earlier it was used in assembly polls in 2014 in some booths of Ranchi and Hatia seats and was subsequently used in all the by-polls which have been held in Jharkhand so far.

In the first half of the day, a similar workshop was organised for political parties which was attended by representatives of eight political parties in the state.
