Tragedy averted: Fire breaks out in NICU of Gumla Sadar Hospital, 5 infants sent to RIMS

Gumla: Fire broke out in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Gumla Sadar Hospital following a short circuit however timely intervention prevented the fire from spread further and causing damage to life.

When the ward caught fire there were 17 infants in NICU who were immediately shifted to other wards. But later 5 infants were sent to RIMS, three are being treated in Gumla Sadar Hospital itself while eight others were discharged.

A doctor who was on his routine check-up spotted the meter in NICU on fire which soon started spreading after which the doctors and nurses raised an alarm and took out all the children and also coordinated to douse the flames.

Civil Surgeon Sukhdeo Bhagat who also reached on the spot said that due to load shedding less power was available and the fluctuation in power led to the fire, however, the power department has been informed and with help of a technician, the machines will be repaired. For the time being NICU has been closed.
