Mumbai: Television actress Mahhi Vij opened up about her marriage experience and revealed that when she asked what her in-laws expected from her, their answer was simple—they only wanted her to become part of the family.
The actress shared the emotional memory during an upcoming episode of the show Tum Ho Naa – Ghar Ki Superstar, where host Rajeev Khandelwal led a discussion on the continuing social issue of dowry.
During the conversation, Rajeev expressed concern over recent reports of women losing their lives due to dowry-related harassment. Calling the practice a stain on society, he said such incidents evoke sadness, anger and a sense of collective responsibility.
Responding to the discussion, Mahhi's father, Vinod, reflected on how dowry may have originated in an era when families lacked financial security. However, he stressed that in modern times there is no justification for the practice and that its continued existence is a matter of shame for society.
Sharing her personal experience, Mahhi said she considers herself fortunate to have married into a family that never had any material expectations from her.
Recalling a conversation with the family of her former husband, Jay Bhanushali, she said, “When I asked Jay’s mother and family what they wanted, they told me that even if I didn’t bring any clothes, it would be fine. They just wanted me to come and be a part of the family.”
The touching revelation highlighted the importance of acceptance and relationships over material demands, drawing appreciation from the audience.
Rajeev also made an emotional appeal against the dowry system, urging viewers to reject the mindset that treats dowry as a right. He said no amount of money can be more valuable than a person's life and called on society to end the practice once and for all.
Addressing the audience, he described accepting dowry as a sign of a son's inability to stand on his own feet and encouraged everyone to take a pledge against the social evil.
The powerful discussion concluded with the audience joining Rajeev in an oath to oppose dowry and promote fairness, dignity and respect in marriages.
The episode will air on Sony Entertainment Television and the streaming platform .
