Tezpur Litchi Goes Global: Assam’s GI-Tagged Fruit Makes Export Debut in Dubai

Guwahati: Assam’s celebrated Tezpur litchi has reached international shores for the first time, with its inaugural export consignment being shipped to Dubai, opening new opportunities for farmers and boosting the global profile of the state's prized fruit.

Known for its exceptional sweetness, rich aroma and juicy pulp, Tezpur litchi is primarily grown in the Sonitpur district and has long been a favourite in markets across India. The fruit received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2014, recognizing the unique qualities derived from the region’s distinctive climate and soil conditions.

The milestone export is expected to benefit thousands of growers who depend on litchi cultivation for their livelihoods. Experts believe access to overseas markets will not only increase demand but also help farmers earn better returns through improved pricing and expanded market reach.

Widely admired for its bright red colour, high pulp content and distinctive flavour, Tezpur litchi is considered among the finest varieties produced in the country. The entry into global markets is likely to encourage better harvesting, packaging and quality-control practices, further enhancing its competitiveness.

The export initiative has been facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), which has been actively promoting agricultural products from Northeast India in international markets.

Officials said the move is part of a broader strategy to showcase the Northeast’s unique agricultural produce globally and connect local farmers with international supply chains.

Welcoming the development, Piyush Goyal said Assam’s renowned GI-tagged Tezpur litchi is now carrying its sweetness beyond Indian borders. He noted that the export initiative would help secure better prices for farmers, bring international recognition to the fruit and create new opportunities for agricultural exports from the Northeast.

The successful shipment to Dubai marks a significant milestone for Assam’s horticulture sector and could pave the way for greater exports of the region’s distinctive farm products in the years ahead.
