Maoist attack proves ECI apprehension true in Jharkhand poll

Ranchi: The killing of four security personnel seems to have proved the apprehension of Election Commission of India true. In a major attack ahead of the Jharakhand Assembly polls, Maoists ambushed a Police Control Room (PCR) van, killing an ASI and three other policemen at NH-22 near Rukaiya More at Chandwa in Latehar district of the state.

The incident took place on Friday late evening when a police team was on-board a PCR van in the Chandwa police station area when the rebels ambushed them and opened indiscriminate fire, leading to a gun battle. In the gun battle four policemen were killing.

The incident has taken place just few hours after BJP working president JP Nadda addressed a rally. Acting president of BJP JP Nadda while addressing a rally on Friday had said that under Chief Minister Raghubar Das the Maoists have been wiped out from the state and now the people can easily travel out with their families in night.

The incident has also put question mark on claim of Jharkhand govt that Maoist incidents have declined in the state. In last 19 years this is first time that the Maoist executed killing of policemen before first phase of the poll.

The Chief Election Commissioner of India, Sunil Arora on Thursday said that the five phases poll in Jharkahnd was scheduled based on the Home Ministry report and officials feedback. “ The central Home Ministry this year February 5 report says that the 19 of the 24 districts of Jharkhand Left Wing Maoist affected.

The home ministry released Rs 775 crore for Maoist affected districts and RS 340 crore was released for Jharkhand” said Arora in a press conference on Thursday. When asked the central govt statement in parliament 45 per cent declines have been registered in Maoists activities in Jharkhand he said “ we go by written documents which is in public domain and feedback of the officials.

The officials feedback was that the Maoist could use new tactics and new ways to obstruct poll”. What is interesting is that an Inter state coordination meeting of various issues in connection with State Assembly Elections 2019 was held at the police headquarters on Friday.

Jharkhand DGP KN Choubey stressed on the need to strengthen the intelligence network and share the information on a timely basis and conducting of joint operations. He directed the SSPs and SPs of the bordering districts to identify check posts and conduct regular checking drive.

He also suggested that in wake of the recent Maoist incidents in rural areas similar type of exercise should be conducted. The DGP also gave his inputs how in phase wise and time bound manner with the help of neighbouring states like Bihar, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh the Maoists can be wiped out.

Police sources say that they were not expecting Maoist attack before first phase of the poll. Police term it as an act of desperation.
