No Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha polls simultaneously in Jharkhand: CEC

Ranchi: Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora Wednesday ruled out the possibility of having Lok Sabha and Assembly polls together in the state. Briefing the press he said that the commission has no formal or informal information regarding holding both the elections simultaneously in the state.

He said that the commission would be writing to the state government to the state government to remove all the officials who are occupying an office for the last three years. On all the recent controversy surrounding the EVM Mr Arora said that Electronic Voting Machines are tamper-proof and it is high time that all rumor-mongering about the possibility of tampering it in any way, be stopped immediately. He said that EVM machines are in use for more than two decades, and on request from political parties, use of VVPAT machines have been started.

He added that there could be occasional malfunctioning of some EVMs here and there, but that could not be called tampering. Mr Arora said that all political parties have been asked to appoint their Booth Level Agents in Jharkhand so that there are no scope of any doubts about any possible manipulation. He said that all EVM machines in Jharkhand will have verifiable VVPAT machines and the VVPAT record would be preserved for five years for any possible verification.

A 14 Member team of Election Commission was in Ranchi for two days holding meetings with all concerned senior officers and political parties for conducting free and fair elections in the upcoming General Election.
