Ravan Dahan: 70 feet long effigy of demon king to be set up in Morhabadi, traditional dances to be performed

Ranchi: After two years, again this time Dussehra will be celebrated in the historic Morhabadi ground of Ranchi for which preparations are in full swing. This year marks the 74th Dusherra celebrations at Morhabadi Maidan. Like every year this time also the Punjabi-Hindu Biradari is preparing for Ravan Dahan.

For the last 25 years, only Muslim artisans have been making effigies of Ravan, Kumbhakaran and Meghnath. These effigies are made under the leadership of Gaya resident Md Muslim. A total of 17 artisans are working day and night in it in which 12 are from the minority community. Silli’s Paika, Jamshedpur’s Chhau dance and Shivakashi Kolkata’s fireworks will be the main attractions in this time’s Ravan Dahan program.

Competitions of Paika, Chhau and Fireworks will be organized. The organizing committee will also honor the best performers. This time on the occasion of 74th year of the celebrations the height of the effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakaran and Meghnath is being increased.

The height of Ravan is 70 feet, Kumbhakaran 65 feet and Meghnath will be 60 feet. Along with this, Lanka will also be made this time which will be 30/30 feet.

The chief guest of the Ravan Dahan program will be Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Ravan Dahan took place for the first time in 1952 at Morhabadi Maidan. In 1952 late Amir Chand Fatija of Ferozepur Punjab started it by making a 10-feet effigy. Since then, Ravan Dahan has been done continuously on Mohrabadi ground. It was not organized only in the last two years due to corona.
