Ranchi: With a view to finding hidden sporting talents from the hinterland of the state the Central Coal Fields Ltd which runs the Jharkhand State Sports Promotion Society in collaboration of the state government has decided to organize Khel-Mahakumbh from
January 7 so that young athletes from the blocks and even panchayat level can get into its sports academy.
Addressing a press conference here CCL CMD Gopal Singh said that under the Khel Mahakumbh initiative from January 7 to February 5 the registration for trials would commence while from February 7 to April 20, 2019 the district wise trials would commence from Dhanbad and from May 8 to May 13 3000 top athletes will be made to undergo training at the sports academy with the coaches after which the short listed candidates would be made to undergo medical screening on May 18-19 after which the final merit list would be published with the academic session to commence from June 1.
To increase the outreach of the programme CCL has decide to reach to almost all the schools and even panchayats and blocks to felicitate the registration of the children who can download the mobile app from the google play store or can find the link from the official web page of the company and undertake the process registration. Mr Singh said that the first two batches of the students studying in the sports academy have managed to win a total of 268 medals including those at the district, state, zonal, CBSE national and at the National level.
He pointed that despite having no reservation provisions atleast 95 percent children studying in the academy are from SC/ST/OBC communities. The CMD said that Jharkhand has been a powerhouse traditionally in hockey and archery however after this academy came into existence the children from the state are bagging medals in wrestling which considered to be the favourite of Punjab and Haryana.
He said that athletes of the state are full of talent and have the capacity to reach the far distance provided they get the correct opportunity which the company was trying to provide through its academy. On the occasion, Mr Singh also launched the mobile app for Khel-Mahakumbh.
