Elephant ‘Samrat’ dies at Birsa Munda Zoo

Ranchi: For the last 21 years Elephant ‘Samrat’ who was a big draw at the Birsa Munda Zoo of the state capital breathed his last on Thursday.

After performing the post-mortem his body was buried inside the zoo premises itself. Samrat had been brought from the forests of Chaibasa in the year 1998 when he was just three months old and had got separated from his group.

The keepers at the zoo had fed him milk from a bottle and had kept him alive.

Director of the Zoo said that the tusker was healthy till Wednesday however on Thursday morning he stopped taking food following which zoo doctor commenced his treatment. He said that the doctor of Guwahati Zoo Padamshri KK Sharma was also contacted and on his advice some medicines were given to him.

Unfortunately, Samrat could not be saved and breathed his last at 1.30 pm. He said that only post-mortem report will reveal the real reasons for the death.
