63.77 pc voters lock fate of 59 candidates in EVM

Ranchi: Much to the respite of the Election Commission Lok Sabha polls on three seats of Jharkhand including Chatra, Lohardaga (ST) and Palamu (SC) concluded peacefully in the state with 63.77 percent voters turning up the polling booths braving the extremely hot weather conditions to lock the future of 59 candidates in the EVMs who are contesting these polls.

The average voter turn out on these seats was recorded 63.77 percent whereas constituency wise the voter turn out at Chatra has been recorded at 62.06 percent, Lohardaga 64.88 percent and Palamu 64.35 percent. In the elections of 2014 the voter turn out at Chatra was 54.32 percent,  Lohardaga 58.21 percent and Palamu 59.38 percent.

Prominent candidates whose fate has been locked in the EVMs included Sunil Singh of the BJP, Manoj Yadav of the Congress and Subhash Yadav of the RJD who were contesting in Chatra, Sudarshan Bhagat of BJP and Sukhdeo Bhagat of Congress in Lohardaga and VD Ram of the BJP and Ghuran Ram of the RJD in Palamu.

Briefing the press Chief Electoral Officer L Khiyangate said that barring a few minor incidents polling had concluded peacefully in the state and expressed his happiness over the voting percentage going up as compared to the year 2014. A total of 59 candidates were in the race for these three seats with a maximum of 26 candidates in Chatra, 14 in Lohardaga and 19 others in Palamu. Total of 45,26, 691 voters were eligible to cast their votes on 6072 polling booths spread across these three seats. The total number of male voters was  23,85,932, female voters 21,40,750 and 11 third gender voters. Since all these constituencies are also part of LWE districts in the state therefore elaborate security arrangements were made.

The election commission had identified 40 percent of the booths as very sensitive on which CRPF personnel were deployed. Overall 500 companies of the security forces including those from paramilitary were deployed in this phase while an aerial watch was also maintained through five helicopters.
