Chief Secretary orders probe into caustic soda plant incident in Hindalco

Ranchi: Jharkhand Chief Secretary D K Tiwari ordered a probe into breaking of the caustic pond of Hindalco located in Muri which took place earlier in the day today. The Chief Secretary has directed Commissioner of North Chottanagpur Division Shubhra Verma to conduct a high-level probe into the caustic pond incident and has asked to look into all the issues related to the incident and submit a probe report as soon as possible.

Mr Tiwari has also directed that it should be ensured that people in and around the incident spot do not face any problem. An official press release issued here said that a team of NDRF has been sent to the spot while relief and rescue measures by the district administration and other government agencies were on at the spot. On the other hand, Mr MN Roy, Joint president and Head Muri Works for Hindalco in a statement issued here said that there was an accident in the red mud storage area connected to the plant situated at Muri in the noon.

The incident involved a spillage in the red mud cake storage area. “We are ascertaining the reasons for the same and have stopped operations temporarily to asses the situation,” he said adding that primary investigation indicates there has been no damage to the surrounding environment or to property and four persons with minor injuries have been treated.

Earlier in the day many people were feared trapped and swept away in the debris as the caustic pond of Hindalco suddenly broke up following a land cave-in. Eyewitnesses had claimed that the incident has taken place at the red mud store point.
