300 dead due to lightning incidents in last year in Jharkhand, govt fails to take corrective measures

Ranchi: The state government has failed to take corrective measures to prevent lightning in Jharkhand as a result of which in the previous year itself 300 people lost their lives in lightning-related incidents but despite announcements of many schemes none of them can be realized on grounds.

In Deoghar and Ranchi, only lightning conductors were installed. Despite four years in six districts, the industrial disaster management corridor could not be made under which to counter any disaster a relief centre would have been built having facilities of food and medicines and talks of improving the medical management was also made. There were also plans to install lightning arrester grid in the mineral-rich districts including the East and West Singhbhum and others including Bokaro Ranchi Hazaribagh Ramgarh and Koderma but no step was taken.

On the other hand action plan made for block and district levels also failed to see the light of the day. Despite the fact that the state government every year spend between Rs 11- 12 crore for paying compensation in case of lightning-related deaths in the state as in case of death the kin is entitled to compensation of Rs 4
lakh.
