Rains continue to pound Jharkhand for third consecutive day, rivers and water bodies flooded

Ranchi: The incessant rainfall which continued to pound the state for the third consecutive day on Wednesday has got the rivers and other water bodies swollen with many of them flowing above the danger mark.

On one hand, the rains have got the smile back on the faces of the farmers involved in paddy cultivation while on the other side it has brought gloom on the vegetable producers. Across many districts, there have been reports of embankments being broken by the rivers.

In the last 24 hours, Hazaribagh has received maximum rainfall at 89.7 mm followed by Dhanbad at 80 mm and Koderma at 71 mm. Ranchi had recorded 30 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.

Since the rains have been coupled with cold winds therefore the temperature has also gone down with mercury in Ranchi going down by 8 degrees in the last 48 hours. It is expected that the rains will reduce by Thursday during which it has been predicted that the clouds will clear and sun will shine bright and high. The weather will be absolutely clear on Vishwakarma Puja which falls on September 17.

Scientists at the local weather station said that this is for the first time in the Monsoon season that a deep depression has been formed. The low pressure formed in the Bay of Bengal has converted into a deep depression which was causing rainfall across the state.

Due to nonstop rains water level in Topchanchi Lake, Maithon Dam and Panchet Dam in Dhanbad district has reached the danger mark and so has the Kharkai river in Jamshedpur due to which danger of flooding has increased in low lying areas of Jamshedpur city. Waterlogging has been also reported from Jugsalai and Bagbeda.

The farmers cultivating paddy are happy with the rains and are hopeful of a good harvest while vegetable producers complained that ladyfinger, cabbage, tomatoes etc have been submerged into the waters causing them losses.

For the next three days, the weather station has predicted light rainfall in some areas of central and Southern Jharkhand while on September 17 rains have been predicted in northwestern regions and on September 18 in central and eastern regions.
