Giridih: A man who was arrested for goat theft died in police lockup at Madhuvan Police station of this district.
Giridih DC Rahul Sinha on Saturday ordered for a magistrate probe into the incident after it was alleged that the man had died due to police beatings. The deceased has been identified as Balwan Mahto a resident of Karidih village under Rajganj Police Station area of Dhanbad district.
Police sources said that Mahto was caught by villagers while he was trying to flee after stealing a goat in Khotatand village and was later handed over to the police. On Friday night itself, Mahto died in the lock-up but the incident came to notice on Saturday.
